YKI Finnish exam: format, fee and preparation

For citizenship and résidence permits
Finnish citizenship requires level 3 (B1) in speaking and writing, taken at the intermediate level test.
Exam format
- 📖Reading comprehension: multiple choice with three options, true or false, open answers. News, opinion pieces, instructions, adverts.
- 🎧Listening comprehension: interviews, news, announcements, short dialogues. Every recording is played twice.
- ✍️Writing: three tasks, typically a letter, an email and a reasoned comment on a published opinion.
- 🎤Speaking: short reactions to prompts, then a one to two minute monologue on a topic.
Scoring
Each of the four subtests is assessed separately on a scale of 1 to 6. There is no single overall mark: what counts is the level reached in each subtest.

Since 1 January 2026 a registration cannot be moved to another date. Check the calendar before you pay.

Can I change my YKI test date?
No. Since 1 January 2026, registrations cannot be rescheduled.
How many times is each listening recording played?
Twice, at both the basic and the intermediate level.
